Best Paper Award of IEEE CSS/RAS/SMCS joint chapter

The IEEE Finland Joint Chapter CSS/RAS/SMCS established a Best Paper Award competition to recognize distinguished contributions made by its members. These contributions serve as exemplars for fellow members to aspire towards.

ELIGIBILITY 

Any IEEE member of good standing and of Graduate Student Member grade or above and associated with the Jt. Chapter (membership will be determined using https://tblanalytics.ieee.org/) and who is a (co-)author of a journal or conference publication within the journals and conferences listed in the following sites:

The publication date must be between 01.01.2022 and 31.12.2022.

Conditions:

  1. The primary applicant for each paper entry in the competition has to be a member of the chapter, by the date of the application.  
  2. An applicant can’t utilize a co-author’s chapter affiliation to apply.
  3. Each application needs to be accompanied by the applicant’s IEEE number.
  4. The award is personal, and it aims to acknowledge the contribution of the applicant in a certain field within the chapter’s main societies.
  5. In case of papers with overlapping names of co-authors, recognition is given only to the primary applicant.
  6. Members of Jt. Chapter Board are NOT eligible for the award.

PRIZE ITEMS

The Best Paper Award consists of three prizes, each prize is including a certificate. Additionally, the awardees will receive monetary rewards as follows:

  • First Prize: EUR 400.00
  • Second Prize: EUR 200.00
  • Third Prize: EUR 100.00

AWARD SELECTION COMMITTEE

The Jt. Chapter Board will verify the eligibility of nominees and seek expert evaluation before it announces the final decision.

SELECTION PROCESS

The decision on the awards will be solely based on scientific excellence, originality, utility, timeliness, and impact. Nominations are screened and reduced to a short list by the Jt. Chapter Board after the reviews provided by invited experts in relevant fields. Short-listed nominations are then evaluated by the Jt. Chapter Board which will make the final decision. Depending on the quality of the nominations, there might be fewer than three prizes awarded.

PRESENTATION

The award will be presented by the Jt. Chapter Chair or his designee at an appropriate Jt. Chapter meeting. The award shall be presented in the name of the Jt. Chapter.

PUBLICITY

The award recipient shall be publicized in the (name) website of the  Jt. Chapter. A press release shall be sent to the appropriate newspaper(s) of the recipient’s choice

IEEE Finland CSS/RAS/SMCS Joint Chapter held the officer election meeting in December 2022. New officers have been elected for the term 2023-2024. The new officers are:

AI in robotics and smart materials – Future of Robotics in Finland Seminar 2022

IEEE Finland CSS/RAS/SMCS Joint Chapter held the officer election meeting at Aalto University, TUAS building, room 1021-1022 on Friday 25.11.2016 at 14:15-16:00. New officers have been elected for the term 2017-2018.

Future of Robotics in Finland Seminar 2016

The 4nd Future of Robotics in Finland Seminar was successfully held on Friday 25.11.2016 at Aalto University, Espoo, Finland, organized by the IEEE Finland Joint Chapter of the Control System Society, Robotics and Automation Society and Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society. This year the main theme was on Big Data in Robotics and Automation, which attracted near 100 participants from 38 organizations, including 24 companies and key players such as TEKES, Confederation of Finnish Industries, VTT, ABB, Nokia, Metso, etc..

The morning session is organized by keynote talks and pitch talks. Prof. Quan Zhou started the seminar at 9:00 and introduced the IEEE, the chapter and standing officers, followed by four keynote talks by IEEE RAS distinguished lecturer Prof. Michael Beetz from University of Bremen, Dr. Johan Pensar from Valmet Automation, Dr. Emil Ackerman from Quva Oy, and Dr. Heikki Huttunen from Tampere University of Technology on topics such as openEASE, big data in Finnish industry, and the consequences of machine learning on robotics. There is a coffee break and a lunch break during the keynote talks, which are organized together with the industry demonstration and poster sessions. The seminar is then followed by 6 pitch talks, four from industry and two from academia.

The seminar ended with a panel discussion, featuring panelist Prof. Michael Beetz, Dr. Emil Ackerman, Dr. Heikki Huttunen, and Dr. Juha Orivuori, and moderator Prof. Ville Kyrki, on various aspects of the impact of big data on robotics and automation.

The standing officers of IEEE Finland Joint Chapter of the Control System Society, Robotics and Automation Society and Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society organizing the event are Quan Zhou, chair, Ville Kyrki, vice chair, Juha Orivuori, treasurer and Peter Jakubik, secretory. Excursion to ABB marine laboratory 06.09.2016 14:00-16:00

IEEE Finland Joint Chapter of CSS, RAS and SMCS is organizing an Excursion to ABB marine laboratory (see also video introduction). The time of the excursion is Tuesday 06.09.2016 14:00-16:00, the location is Vuosaari harbor, Merenkulkijankatu 1, Helsinki.  The number of attendees is limited to 30. The attendance is free, but members of IEEE CSS/RAS/SMCS has priority. The attendees are expected to cover the travel expenses, however. Please save the date. The registration and exact organization of the visit will be announced later.

 

Treasurer and Secretory appointed

We have appointed two volunteers for the chapter officer positions of treasurer and secretory following the instruction of IEEE Finland Section:

  • Treasurer: Dr. Juha Orivuori of ABB Finland.
  • Secretary: Dr. Peter Jakubik of Aalto University.

The terms of both officers are 16.11.2015 – 31.12.2016.

With the help of Juha and Peter, we will continue our activities on extending the influences of IEEE and enhancing the interaction between academia and industry.

IEEE Finland CSS/RAS/SMCS Joint Chapter established

IEEE Finland CSS/RAS/SMCS Joint Chapter has been established on 25.10.12. Members of IEEE Control System Society, Robotics and Automation Society and Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society have a constructive meeting in Aalto University TUAS buliding during 14:00-15:10. The meeting discussed the mission, objectives and activities of the joint chapter and presented the chapter officers’ duties. The candidates for the four chapter officers – chair, vice chair, secretary and treasurer have been presented and elected by the meeting attendees: Ville Kyrki for the chair, Lasse Eriksson for the vice-chair, Quan Zhou for the secretary and Tapio Pahikkala for the treasurer.
