Final Newsletter from the 2016 Chair

My Dear Fellow IEEE Young Professionals,

Thank you for allowing me to be your chair for the 2015 and 2016 years. It was a privileged to craft the vision and mission for this organization over the past 2 years and fulfill that vision/mission with the many events we held. It was fun meeting so many of our members (that’s you!) and their friends. It is my hope that our events inspired and equipped you to become stronger leaders, more successful professionals, and more conscientious citizens.  You are our future technology leaders and I hope these events have helped you in becoming that.

I could not have accomplished this without the many board members who volunteered on the IEEE Dallas Young Professionals Board. THANK YOU!!! In addition, a special thank you my executive committee who devoted so many hours to the success of this organization. Again, thank you to the many board members who accompanied me on this journey. I could not have done this without you.

As I step down, Robert Berry will be stepping into the role as the 2017 Chair. He has many years as an IEEE Dallas Young Professional Board Member, most recently serving as the 2016 Secretary. He has a great vision and I expect next year’s events to be extremely fun! (FYI: The 2016 Katy Trail Ice House and Fun Run was his idea.) He is looking for volunteers to assist him in making the IEEE Dallas Young Professionals the best IEEE affinity group. Will you help him?

All the following officer positions are open:
Vice Chair
Director of Communications
Director of Membership
Director of Outreach
General Officer

Please go here to find out more about the expectations for each position:

To apply, please send me and Robert Berry an email:

Daniel Schlieter, PhD
2015/2016 Chair
IEEE Dallas Young Professionals

Share Your Knowledge and Experience with College Students

Call for Volunteers: Engineer in Residence at The University of Texas at Dallas

The IEEE Engineer in Residence is looking for volunteers. The IEEE Engineer in Residence (EiR) is a volunteer program that brings engineers to UT Dallas to share their knowledge and experience from an industry perspective. Volunteers hold “office hours” for at least 6 hours a month to mentor engineering and computer science students by providing technical advice, career guidance, and opportunities to work on projects. This is a refreshing & satisfying way to directly engage with UT Dallas’s brightest minds, give back to your local community, and prepare the next generation of young professionals.

Mentor and Lead High School Student Projects

Call for Volunteers: The Shoulder of Giants Mentorship Program

The Shoulders of Giants (TSoG) is seeking volunteers to mentor high school students in their lab environment in a variety of disciplines including but not limited to:
– Computer Science / Software Engineering
– Solid Mechanics / Mechanical Engineering
– Chemistry / Chemical Engineering
– Biology / Bioengineering
– Electricity / Electrical Engineering

Students (on a completely voluntary basis) attend weekly classes here in our lab to explore many areas of science and engineering which supplements their high school curriculum with hands on activity, in depth knowledge, and useful skill sets. We are seeking individuals from the science and technical community to work alongside these stellar students and actively contribute to our friendly lab environment. A background in a technical field is preferred. A love of learning and a friendly disposition are necessary!

TSoG conducts background checks on all volunteers prior to working with students.
