IEEE Dallas Consultants Network Meeting

DATE: September 13, 2021

TIME: 7pm

SPEAKER: Dr. Urenna Onyewuchi, Founder of IEEE Power Africa Conference

TOPIC: Leveraging Engineering Skills to Empower the Next Generation of Leaders

DESCRIPTION:

Dr. Onyewuchi will emphasize her speech during her GATech PhD graduation ceremony: that subject matter experts can and should apply their skill sets to enrich local and global communities needing help. She hopes that her enthusiasm around changing the world one IEEE mentor or donor at a time will encourage IEEE members to join her team and committees to empower youth. How? Through her platform, sign up to teach Math and reading at local schools. Sign up to brainstorm on strategies and technology solutions to improve mental and financial independence of survivors of domestic abuse and victims of racial-gender-diasbility bias. Sponsor an African student’s e-learning course on ending corruption in Africa. These are the low hanging fruit initiatives that she and her small team are already tackling. With the power of an IEEE train in the DFW area, we can make a huge impact in a small amount of time while having fun. She is hosting a meet-and-greet event in DFW on Sept. 1.

Bio:

Dr. Urenna Onyewuchi is a GATech doctorate grad, earning her PhD in asset management of power and energy systems with a minor in Industrial and Systems Engineering. Her Master’s degree was also from GATech in electrical engineering with a minor in Management. Her Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with specialization in Digital Signal Processing was from George Mason University.

Dr. Onyewuchi chose the path of electrical engineering to improve access to electricity in her cultural home country of Nigeria. (She is Texas-born.) Since moving back to the US from Nigeria at the age of 16, she has served in advocating for rights and visibility of people of African descent and awareness of the African culture. She has taught Math in Atlanta’s “inner cities,” raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and donated several thousands of her own money to educate Africans in renewable energy entrepreneurship and similar programs. She has exposed over 500 teenage girls to STEM in the US and Africa over the last 5 years.

Dr. Onyewuchi established the IEEE Power Africa Conference as an annual flagship conference on increasing electricity access on the continent. The conferences generate a revenue around $250,000 annually. With her leadership, the conference has been hosted in 5 countries in 5 years versus 2 times in about 10 years only in South Africa. This conference is her most treasured IEEE accomplishment.

Her present responsibilities are in providing appropriate e-learning on soft skills to supplement the technical skills of electrical engineers in under-resourced communities, providing diversity improvement strategies for global organizations, interviewing subject matter experts on areas of dire need in under-resourced communities, and consulting in the areas of energy management, power quality and asset management. She continues to raise money to educate and empower youth in Nigeria, Africa and the US.
