Google’s self-driving car project has grown into a company called Waymo, an independent company within the Alphabet umbrella, with the mission of making it safe and easy for people and things to move around. Waymo has a partnership with Fiat Chrysler, which is incorporating self-driving software and sensors into its Pacifica minivans.

The self-driving car project Google started seven years ago has grown into a company called Waymo, an independent company within the Alphabet umbrella. Waymo, which stands for “Way forward in mobility,” has the mission of making “it safe and easy for people and things to move around,” executives said at a press conference announcing the news in San Francisco on Tuesday. Waymo has a partnership with Fiat Chrysler, which is incorporating self-driving software and sensors into its Pacifica minivans. Google’s self-driving car project has grown into a company called Waymo.

Google has been working on self-driving cars for the past eight years. The team was under the Google X division, and largely was a research and development effort. But as more technology companies and automakers moved have stepped up their self-driving car efforts over the past year, the pressure grew for Google to steer its autonomous project toward becoming a commercial enterprise.
