Public Transport in Santander
Municipal buses run throughout the city every 15 minutes. Buses number 1, 2, 4, 7, 13 run from the city hall (Ayuntamiento) to “El Sardinero” beaches stopping at “Plaza de Italia” and Piquio Gardens (Jardines de Piquío). Bus number 15 runs from RENFE train station to “El Sardinero” beach. Bus number 7 runs from the city centre or “El Sardinero” area to the Universities area.
Method of payment:
• You can purchase individual tickets on the same bus (it costs 1,30€).
• You can buy a rechargable bus card (it costs 1€) at any “kiosko” or tobacco shops. Minimum of charge 6€ and maximum 36€.
Taxis offer a 24 hour service and it is always the quickest option in a medium size city as Santander is. There are taxis waiting outside the train and bus stations, and on “Vargas” Street, “Paseo Pereda”, “Río de la Pila” or near the city hall (Ayuntamiento). You’ll find a city map with all taxi stops at the tourist information office. You can order a taxi by phone at (+34) 942 333 333 or (+34) 942 369 191.
The average fare from the city center to “El Sardinero” is around 8€. Additional charges apply if you travel on some public holidays or at night.
Renting a bike: There are 15 hiring points throughout the city to collect and deliver the bikes. Right there at the machine post, you will be able to buy the tickets. The options more suitable for you are:
• Daily ticket: 1,52€
or
• Weekly ticket: 7,11€
For both options, you will be requested to introduce your credit card and then a deposit of 150€ will be retained from it together with the daily or weekly fee (depending on what you have selected). The deposit will be refunded to you within a week after delivering the bike providing that it has not been returned damaged.
