September 15, 2017 Tour of AEP Microgrid Station

TOUR OF AMERICAN ELECTRIC POWER’S WALNUT MICROGRID TEST BED STATION IN GROVEPORT

Overview: The IEEE Columbus PES chapter will provide a tour of AEP’s innovative Walnut microgrid test bed station in Groveport, Ohio.  The Walnut Test Facility was commissioned in 2002 as a place to test and evaluate Distributed Energy Resources (DER’s).  The site hosts four test bays each with its own 13,200/480 V transformer and a high pressure natural gas supply.  The 2 acre facility has been used to test energy storage, fuel cells, waste heat recovery systems and is currently the site of the AEP CERTS Microgrid Test Bed.  The CERTS Microgrid Project is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and the California Energy Commission and has produced 35 IEEE papers and 20 technical reports or other papers.  The CERTS Microgrid Project is a partnership between Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, the University of Wisconsin, American Electric Power, The Ohio State University, and Sandia National Lab.  The facility is part of AEP’s Dolan Technology Center (more information at:  http://www.dolantechcenter.com/About/WalnutStation.aspx ).

AEP Staff Engineer Amrit Khalsa will conduct a tour of the facility and provide an overview of its capabilities.  The event is free to Columbus-area IEEE members, students, or those interested in joining.  *Note that Professional-Development hours will not be provided for this event.

The only safety requirement is that proper footwear is required for the tour.  No open-toe footwear or high-heels, due to the gravel surface in the power station.
