Title:  “From Shades of Gray Situations to Black and White Solutions

Abstract:  Engineers and other technical professionals provide their greatest contribution to society by being ethical when solving problems and making decisions in the application of technology. However, ethical situations often are not black or white issues. Typically, various solutions appear to be shades of gray. In making ethical decisions, engineers need to be sensitive to how this will impact others. Although ethical behavior is based on personal values, there are guidelines to help professional engineers make ethical decisions. This presentation addresses ethics from a practical viewpoint and includes audience group exercises. It is designed to use team building skills and other engineering principles to change an ethical dilemma that appears to be shades of gray to a black and white solution based on proven ethical standards for our profession.

Presenter:   Jim Watson is a Registered Professional Engineer and a Life-Senior Member of IEEE.

Jim Watson is a Registered Professional Engineer and a Life-Senior Member of IEEE.  Following a 36-year engineering and management career with Ohio Edison, he founded Watson Associates to incorporate professional skill development within existing university engineering technical classes. Watson Associates has directed the use of this program for more than 30,000 students at 7 major engineering universities.

As an international speaker, Jim has delivered more than 2,100 presentations in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia to a total audience of over 100,000, including more than 1,300 presentations to 65,000 students at 175 universities.  Jim has also been a keynote speaker at 80 conferences and seminars for practicing engineers.
