February 2019 – Seminar on Induced Voltage and Current Analysis for Parallel Transmission Lines
We just had another great event on Feb. 28th at AEP Ohio buiding. Our past chair, Jerod Marker, presented the 2018 Outstanding Engineer Award to John Lauletta, CEO of Exacter, Inc. Bethany McCrea, manager of AEP Transource, introduced IEEE ESMO Conference, which is hosted by AEP, to our members and welcome everyone to register and support this great event at this June. Then, Xuan Wu, Chair of PES Columbus Chapter, presented the induced voltage & current analysis for parallel transmission lines with many good questions and interests. Let’s look forward to other great events in the future.
Title: Induced Voltage & Current Simulations, Safety Criterion, and Mitigation for EHV Transmission Lines in Close Proximity
This seminar will be given by Dr. Xuan Wu from American Electric Power, who is also the current chair of IEEE PES Columbus Chapter. 1.0 hour of CPD credit will be provided to attendees as needed.
Abstract: One of the benefits of double-circuit transmission lines is that line maintenance work can be performed on a deenergized circuit while the other circuit remains energized. However, induced voltages and currents can be generated on the de-energized line due to electrostatic and/or electromagnetic coupling effects and the close proximity to energized conductors. In order to mitigate the safety concern related to high induced voltages or currents, line discharging grounding switches (LDGS) may be installed. Since this can be an expensive solution, the magnitude of induced voltage and current is the key for defining safety criteria to judge whether or not a costly mitigation plan is needed. This paper presents the theory of induced voltage and current and a sensitivity analysis of influential parameters that impact each. In addition, a safety criterion using arc reach calculation is proposed to determine when LDGS are required.
