TVA Transformer Basics
Good power engineering is a business of details. Transformers look like very simple wiggly lines on a single line diagram, and what they do is very simple isn’t it? Well actually no, it isn’t. There’s a lot more to a transformer than some windings, a core, and a steel tank of oil. If you walked by a 500kV transformer today it’s unlikely that you’d understand most of what you see.
Do you know the difference between a core form and a shell form transformer, and why? Did you know that operating a transformer reliably is harder than driving a Formula 1 race car? And a lot more expensive if you get it wrong, and how easy it is to get it wrong? Do you how TVA keeps track of what’s going on inside a transformer (hint – it’s a little more than a volt-ammeter can tell you)?
