About Eta Kappa Nu
Chartered independently from the IEEE on October 28th, 1904, HKN was created by ten electrical engineering students in Central Illinois. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (the Alpha chapter) was the birthplace of the very first HKN chapter. Led by Maurice L. Carr, the founders held their first officer elections in 1905 before expanding to Purdue University in 1906 and Ohio State in 1907. By 1994, the organization would operate over 200 student chapters: promoting scholarship, outstanding character, leadership, and a balanced lifestyle. Sharing many objectives with the IEEE, the two organizations officially merged on September 1, 2010.
The name “HKN” is an abbreviation of the Greek “ΗΛΕΚΤΡΟΝ” (meaning “amber” or “electron”).
