Particle Swarm Optimization meeting, Wed., Dec. 6th, ISU campus

Please join us on Wednesday, Dec. 6th, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:30 for an educational and technical event on the Illinois State University (ISU) campus. Drs. Elliackin Messias Figueiredo and Hugo Valadares Siqueira are Brazilian Visiting Scholars in the Department of Technology at ISU. They are here as part of the Fulbright Distinguished Chair award that Prof. Anu A. Gokhale received for 2016-17. The research team comprises of professors, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students in Brazil and at ISU. The talk will provide an overview of the studies undertaken by this group.

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a bio-inspired technique that has been applied successfully in many fields to solve optimization problems. In particular, the speakers will address applications in machine learning such as clustering, classification, and feature selection. The focus will be on two machine learning tasks, namely, time series forecasting of riverflow and pollutant dispersion, and clustering undergraduate students based on their grammatical errors.

Additionally, the speakers will briefly reflect on their experiences in the U.S. and provide some personal insights into similarities and differences between the U.S. and Brazilian cultures.
