Development of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations. Plus “Life with an EV”

Charging Station

Electric vehicle charging stations are the connection between modern plug-in EVs and the utility grid. They enable EVs to be charged at home or in public parking areas and must be compatible with standard EV ports. Engineering members at the Cedar Rapids Schneider Electric Design Center (former “Square D”) have played an integral role in product development and standards development for AC “level 2” and DC “level 3” charging stations. A presentation will be given on how they work and the development challenges. Various home and public charging stations will be on display.

Meet at Schneider Electric between 4:30 – 5:00pm for light snacks. Directions below.

Program is from 5pm – 6pm. Following the program we will move to the Metro Buffet on 33rd Ave near I-380 for a meal (optional).

Rock Island Clean Line HVDC Project

The Rock Island Clean Line,, is a 500-mile overhead high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line that will deliver 3,500 megawatts from northwest Iowa and the surrounding region to communities in Illinois and other states to the east, areas that have a strong demand for clean, reliable energy. The name of the project comes from the Rock Island Railroad, which stretches across the entire state of Iowa, through the city of Rock Island and into Illinois. Just as the Rock Island Railroad allowed farmers to move their goods to market, the Rock Island Clean Line will deliver clean, renewable energy to the communities that need it, representing the new farm to market model for the 21st century.

Solar Splash Event in Waterloo / Cedar Falls

The IEEE Power Electronics Society’s Solar Splash Event runs from 8-12 June in Cedar Falls / Waterloo!

From the Solar Splash Website:

SOLAR SPLASH is the World Championship of intercollegiate Solar/Electric boating. Its official name is “an international intercollegiate solar/electric boat regatta,” and it takes place over five days. Technical Inspections are done on the first day, and the remainder of the time is occupied by five on-the-water competitive events. Points are earned in 7 categories starting with Technical reports that are submitted before teams arrive at the competition. On-site competitions include Visual Displays and Workmanship. On-the-water events begin with a Sprint and a Maneuverability qualifier. This is followed by an event called the Solar Slalom, which is a combination of speed and maneuverability. The final days are spent in the Sprint and Endurance events.
