2012 Annual Report

Leveraging Our Insight

As the world’s largest technical professional organization, we believe that we have a responsibility to support our members in their efforts to help policy makers make good decisions. While we have long undertaken this kind of effort in the United States, the interest of our members in other countries in these activities is growing rapidly.

IEEE Calls on Governments to Support UN Sustainable Power Campaign

In January, the IEEE Board of Directors endorsed the United Nations’ Sustainable Energy for All Initiative, which calls for universal access to modern energy services, doubling the rate of increase in energy efficiency, and doubling the fraction of renewable energy in the world’s energy portfolio, all by 2030. This action drew a joint statement of support from 49 other engineering societies headquartered in 29 countries.

IEEE Helps Develop OpenStand Principles

IEEE joined with the Internet Society, the Internet Engineering Task Force and the World Wide Web Consortium in 2012 to develop a set of principles for the establishment of a modern paradigm for global open standards development. The groups also signed a statement affirming the importance of the OpenStand principles and invited other standards organizations, corporations, civil society organizations, academia, and technologists globally to endorse the principles. By year-end, many other standards organizations had joined in supporting the OpenStand principles.

IEEE-USA Sponsors Health IT Week; Promotes STEM Education

IEEE-USA implemented a new strategic direction in 2012 designed to better engage members. Underscoring this commitment was IEEE-USA’s participation in the seventh National Health IT Week in Washington, D.C., a forum that highlights the importance of health information technology for the U.S. healthcare system. IEEE-USA joined with more than 200 public and private organizations to co-sponsor the event.

IEEE-USA also made an important contribution to the Second USA Science and Engineering Festival held in Washington, D.C. in April. The largest celebration of STEM education in the U.S., the festival’s mission is to reinvigorate interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. The 2012 event featured over 3,000 interactive exhibits, 100-plus stage shows, and 33 author presentations.

Public Visibility Campaign Positions IEEE as Thought Leader

In 2012, IEEE’s public visibility program continued to create a voice for the engineering profession and position IEEE as the world’s trusted source for engineering, computing, and technology information.

During the year, IEEE technical experts weighed in on timely technology topics, helping to increase IEEE’s global visibility. These efforts have continued to reinforce IEEE as a recognized global brand and positioned IEEE and its members as thought leaders on prominent technology issues. As a result, members, academia, industry, and the media have come to better understand and appreciate the full breadth and resources of IEEE.

Also raising IEEE’s profile during the year was the popular IEEE Green Your World Challenge, which encouraged individuals to reduce their environmental impact. Additionally, IEEE’s public visibility team partnered with IEEE Women in Engineering to support its mission to inspire women to pursue careers in technical disciplines. Through this partnership, IEEE offered a series of live, interactive webinars featuring distinguished female engineers who are recognized globally for their work in engineering. These successful webinars attracted more than 1,000 viewers from 46 countries. IEEE public visibility was also featured at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where IEEE technical experts discussed the top technology trends of 2012.

IEEE Launches New Campaign for Women in Engineering

IEEE Women in Engineering strengthened its mission to inspire more women to seek careers in electrical engineering, computer science and related scientific and technology fields with the launch of its “I Change the World. I Am an Engineer.” campaign. This initiative includes a variety of mobile apps and a 150-page eBook that inspire and empower young women to become engineers. There is also an “I Change the World. I Am an Engineer.” video on IEEE.tv in which women engineers discuss their career paths and professional opportunities in the field of engineering.
