2016 Sigma Xi & IEEE Excellence Awards

Tuesday, May 10th, 2016

The UNM Sigma Xi Chapter announces the winners of its Excellence Awards competition for 2016. Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, is a global honor society of scientists and engineers with a mission to enhance the health of research enterprise, foster integrity in science, and promote understanding of the role of science in improving the quality of life for humans. With its proud traditions and extensive Chapter network (~500 Chapters worldwide), Sigma Xi is a positive force in research community locally, nationally, and internationally.  Induction into Sigma Xi has been a milestone in many distinguished research careers, including those of nearly 200 Nobel laureates initiated into Sigma Xi while they were still graduate students.

UNM Chapter is dedicated to furthering the goals of Sigma Xi in the Albuquerque area. It recognizes individuals in our community who excel in science and engineering research and teaching. For more than 30 years the Chapter has co-sponsored a Distinguished Lecture Series on Science & Society themes to inform New Mexicans about important science issues of the day that impact their lives. In continuing collaboration with the Albuquerque Section of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the following individuals are declared winners of the 2016 Excellence Awards competition in several categories; IEEE is the largest professional organization in the world with ~ 400,000 members, 300 local Sections and 1,150 Chapters in 10 Regions worldwide.

Saturday, March 26th, 2016

Senior member is the highest grade for which IEEE members can apply. IEEE members can self-nominate, or be nominated, for Senior Member grade.

To be eligible for application or nomination, candidates must:

  • Have experience reflecting professional maturity
  • Have been in professional practice for at least ten years (with some credit for certain degrees)
  • Show significant performance over a period of at least five of their years in professional practice

Prospective members who would like to apply directly for Senior Member grade must first join IEEE and then submit the Senior Member application form. An IEEE member number is required on the Senior Member application. There is no additional fee to apply for Senior Member grade.

Benefits of Senior Membership

  • Recognition: The professional recognition of your peers for technical and professional excellence.
  • Senior Member plaque: All newly elevated Senior members receive an engraved Senior Member plaque to be proudly displayed for colleagues, clients, and employers to see. The plaque, made of fine wood with bronze engraving, is sent within six to eight weeks after elevation.
  • US$25 coupon: IEEE will recognize all newly elevated Senior members with a coupon worth up to US$25. This coupon can be used to join one new IEEE Society. The coupon expires on 31 December of the year in which it is received.
  • Letter of commendation: A letter of commendation can be sent to your employer on the achievement of Senior Member grade upon the request of the newly elected Senior member.
  • Announcements: Announcement of elevation can be made upon request to your Section/Society in their local newsletters, newspapers, and notices.
