IEEE has announced the first even Virtual Career and Talent Expo to take place in June 2015.

This event is hosted by Region 6 and comprises the following:

Beginning June 1 – 9 the Career and Talent Expo will host professional development
presentations centered around the talent profile to attendees on the virtual platform. Sessions will
have relevant and informative keynote speakers providing important industry, career and
technical guidance to help participants make important decisions.

June 10 – 12 attend the “live” event. Participants can talk with recruiters and company
representatives in their booths. Prospective employers can conduct interviews with candidates
via video and live chat features and schedule next steps. Recruiters will be available 10:00 a.m.
– 2:00 p.m. PDT.

June 13 – 30 participants can select the virtual booth of the employers in which they are
interested, upload their resumes and watch company video presentations about work culture,
benefits and search job opportunities and conduct any follow up from the live days.

Employers have a choice of three (3) Sponsorship Packages and can exhibit in 14 halls themed
with unique career disciplines aligned with the IEEE:

1. A Gold Recruiting Package – Provides classic recruiting with the added benefit of
participants sharing the personal skills talent report to market their personal talents.

2. A Platinum Job Matching Package – Includes skill-based assessments to provide
the alignment of people to jobs and determine success probability.

3. A Titanium Co-Branding and Job Matching Package – Expands on the Job
Matching option and increases the corporation visibility to a higher relationship level.

This event is free to IEEE members and non-members pay a fee of $125.

On May 11th the Albuquerque Section of the IEEE had the pleasure to present its 2015 awards to three exceptional members of our community. The event took place at the UNM Continuing Education building.

The third award, 2015 Outstanding Young Engineer, was presented to Salvatore Campione, who could not be present at the event. As part of the award Salvatore will give a technical talk to the Section members later this year. His award certificate, and a cash award, will be presented to him at that time. We will post details of the Salvatore’s talk at a later time.

For 2016 we will start the nomination process as early as this fall so we give our Section members more time. Expect the nomination announcement and more award details in the Fall.

The Albuquerque Section of the IEEE would like to extend its condolences to the family of Dr. Lothar Hoeft. Dr. Hoeft passed away last night in Albuquerque.

During the twenty years he spent in the Air Force, he made significant contributions to research and development with the Air Force European Office Physical Science Program Office of Aerospace Research and Development and the-USAF Weapons Laboratory, where he was the Chief of Simulation and Laboratory Support and subsequently the Scientific and Technical Coordinator of the Chief Scientist’s Office. After his retirement from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel, he was a Senior Scientist with BDM International and worked as a private consultant in the area of electromagnetic effects.

Bud’s work influenced the development of more effective cable and connector shielding and influenced the manner in which the Air Force monitors the shielding of aircraft. He was a prolific author of technical papers related to his work and an active member of various professional societies including the IEEE EMC Society, which recognized him as an Honorary Life Member in 2005 and a Society Fellow in 2008.

A viewing will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3 at French’s Funeral Home (1111 University Blvd NE Albuquerque, NM 87102). A memorial service will take place on Monday, May 4 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church (7701 Candelaria Rd NE). Bud will be buried at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 9:00 am on Tuesday, May 5.

Patricia L. Crown received her A.B. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974, and her PhD in Anthropology from the University of Arizona in 1981. She has been on the faculty at the University of New Mexico since 1993, where she is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology. She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2014. Dr. Crown has conducted field investigations in the Ancestral Pueblo, Mogollon, and Hohokam areas of the American Southwest; she recently directed the re-excavation of a room in Pueblo Bonito, Chaco Canyon. With collaborator Jeffrey Hurst, she identified the first prehispanic cacao (chocolate) north of the Mexican border in ceramics from Chaco Canyon.

Abstract. This talk explores the initial recovery of evidence for chocolate drinks in Chaco Canyon and the connection to the Chacoan cylinder jars. It presents results from a recently completed NSF-funded study looking for chocolate residues on almost 200 ceramics from throughout the Southwest. The results show that chocolate may not have been the only caffeinated drink consumed in the southwestern past. Finally, it investigates what this discovery means for our understanding of Southwest-Mesoamerican interaction.

Debra Ann Fischer is a professor of astronomy at Yale University researching detection and characterization of exoplanets. She contributed to the discovery of the first known multiple-planet system. Fischer has co-authored over 200 papers on stellar astrophysics and extrasolar planets. She led the N2K Consortium searching for hot Jupiters around metal-rich stars. For the last decade, she has been leading an instrumentation effort to reach Earth-detecting measurement precision. She was the principal investigator for CHIRON, the CTIO High Resolution Spectrometer in Chile and for EXPRES, a special-purpose spectrometer that will be commissioned at Lowell Observatory in 2016.

Abstract. One of the great successes of modern astronomy was the discovery of a Jupiter-mass planet orbiting the sunlike star, 51 Pegasi in 1995. Since then, hundreds of planets and planetary systems have been detected; however, most would not be habitable for carbon-based life as we know it. The next frontier for exoplanet science is the discovery of analogs of Earth, laden with oceans of water. The discoveries that we have already made hint that these worlds should be common and new instruments are now being designed with the required sensitivity to find them. These are discoveries that will jolt the perspective of humanity and awaken a new view of the Universe.

On January 21st, Dr. Jose Luis Cruz-Campa, a very successful scientist with Sandia National Laboratories, here in Albuquerque, presented the talk Miniaturization effects of solar cell: Microsystems Enabled Photovoltaics as part of the IEEE Albuquerque Section, Sigma Xi series of Distinguished Public Talks.

The talk took place at the UNM Conference Center in the Continuing Education building. Dr. Cruz-Campa went into a very informative presentation on the role that micro electronics systems are having in improving the performance of photovoltaic materials. In particular, Dr. Cruz-Campa, talked about three types of photovoltaic systems, thin film, polycrystalline, and condenser, and how leveraging the use of micro electronics systems and fabrication techniques have led to breakthrough level of efficiency.

Dr. Cruz-Campa was the recipient of the 2014 Outstanding Young Engineer award for our Section for his contributions to the area of photovoltaics. He received the award at the awards banquet last May.
