2019

The IEEE Vancouver Section gathered on October 1, 2019 to celebrate 135 years of IEEE and 10 years of IEEE Day! Thirty five members and friends of the Vancouver Section were in attendance for the celebration.

The event opened with a webinar presentation by IEEE Canada President Maike Luiken, in keeping with this year’s IEEE Day theme of “Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow”. Dr. Rabab Ward, Professor Emeritus at UBC and former IEEE Signal Processing Society President, gave an opening address following the webinar to welcome all attendees and share about her extensive history of involvement with the IEEE.

IEEE Vancouver Section Chair Bob Gill introduced the keynote speaker of the event, Bob Stewart, P. Eng. Mr. Stewart is a past president of EGBC (formerly APEGBC) and gave a presentation entitled “My Journey in the Professional Engineering and IEEE Worlds”. In his presentation, Mr. Stewart described the valuable role that the IEEE played in his career and professional development. Click here for a copy of Mr. Stewart’s PowerPoint presentation. Mr. Stewart has been an IEEE member for 41 years, and one of his most notable contributions was serving on the IEEE Substation Committee as a member and a Subcommittee Chair for 12 years.

As is the tradition for the Section’s IEEE Day Celebrations, attendees made their way from the Creekside Community Centre to the IEEE Vancouver Section Centennial Monument in front of Science World for a group photo just before sunset. Upon returning, attendees stayed on for cake, networking, and a monthly Section meeting following the IEEE Day Celebration.

IEEE Day is a global event celebrated annually by IEEE members around the world.  For more information about the global scope and activities, please visit the primary IEEE Day website at ieeeday.org.
