Speakers: Xiongfei Wang, Aalborg University
Date and time: Monday 15 October, 10:00 – 12:00

Title:  Synchronization Stability of Grid-Connected Voltage-Source Converters

Abstract:

Voltage-source converters (VSCs) are increasingly used with renewable power generations, flexible ac and/or dc power transmission systems. The dynamic interactions between the multi-timescale control dynamics of VSCs and the power grid may lead to instabilities, resonances, or abnormal harmonics across a wide frequency range. This talk is focused on the dynamic effect of the grid synchronization control on converter-grid interactions. The synchronization stability properties of grid-connected VSCs under both small and large disturbances will be discussed. The destabilizing effect of the phase-locked loop will be elaborated through a design-oriented analysis. Active stabilization techniques will also be provided.

Bio:

Xiongfei Wang (SM’17) received the PhD degree in energy technology from Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark in 2013, where he is an Associate Professor with the Department of Energy Technology and the Leader of Research Program on Electronic Power Grid Infrastructure. His research interests include dynamic modeling of power electronics converters, harmonics analysis and mitigation, stability and control of power-electronic-based power systems. He has contributed +50 IEEE Transactions papers in those areas, including 12 ESI Highly Cited Papers in the Web of Science as of 2018.

In 2016, he was selected into Aalborg University Talent Management Program as one of the top 18 young talents for next-generation research leaders. He received four IEEE Prize Paper awards, the outstanding reviewer award of IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics in 2017, and the IEEE PELS Richard M. Bass Young Power Electronics Engineer Award in 2018. He serves as the Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, and the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics. He was the Technical Program Chair for the IEEE eT&D 2017 (renamed as eGrid 2018), which is an industry-oriented workshop launched by IEEE PES and PELS.
