ROBOTUTOR: WORKSHOP ON LINE FOLLOWING ROBOT

On May 26, 2016, a Robotics Workshop, organized by BUET WIE Student Branch Affinity Group in collaboration with IEEE Bangladesh Section and WIE Affinity Group, IEEE Bangladesh Section, was held at ECE Building, BUET. The workshop was moderated by Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Professor, Department of EEE, BUET and honorable founder of WIE Affinity Group, IEEE Bangladesh Section.

The goal of this workshop was to give brief information about the implementation of PID algorithm for making a perfect Line Follower Robot (LFR). It covered various aspects of Robotics- basics of Arduino, understanding the Line Follower and making the Line Follower Robot. The instructors were Shimanto Chowdhury, Nael Mizanur Rahman and Shariful Islam Foysal- members of “AC~DC Labs”, 1st Runner-up at   iARC-2015, Champion of Formula R v2.0 and winners of various local robotics competition.

A total of 18 participants, including 14 IEEE members, from various universities, eagerly attended this workshop. All the participants were provided with full Line Follower Robotics kit that included Arduino, sensor array, motors, motor driver, chassis and connectors.  The first session covered the basics where participants could derive elementary knowledge of robotic operation. In the final session, they developed and ran their own line follower robots using given set of software and kit tools under the guidance of the instructors.

At the ending of this successful program, all the participants received electronic certificates and most importantly, inspiration for future to roam about in the world of robotics with great enthusiasm!

WORKSHOP ON PCB DESIGNING AND PROTOTYPING

On September 22, 2016, a workshop on PCB Designing and Prototyping was organized by BUET WIE Student Branch Affinity Group in collaboration with IEEE BUET Student Branch at ECE Building, BUET. The workshop was conducted by Shuvangkar Chandra Das, Chairperson of IEEE BUET Student Branch, and Rakibul Islam Chowdhury, Vice Chairperson of IEEE BUET Student Branch.This was, by far, the biggest workshop conducted by both IEEE BUET SB and BUET WIE SB AG with a record number of 208 participants. The participants were undergraduate students from various universities and many alumni members of BUET.

The workshop was conducted in three sessions in which the participants learnt about the basics of PCB design and proceeded to the application of the theory on a design project.The workshop was concluded by some inspiring words from Mr. Arnab Bhattacharjee, Lecturer, Department of EEE, BUET and Mr. Asir Intisar Khan, Lecturer, Department of EEE, BUET.

Both the instructors and the participants enjoyed such a motivating workshop. The knowledge and skills acquired from the workshop will help the participants in future projects involving electronic devices and embedded systems. Last but not the least, we would like to thank our enthusiastic volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

WORKSHOP ON GRAPHIC DESIGN

A workshop on graphic designing was held on October 6, 2016 at ECE building in BUET jointly organized by BUET WIE Student Branch Affinity Group and IEEE BUET Student Branch. The goal of this workshop was to develop the basics of graphic designing so that participants could get acquainted with this engrossing field and manuals of running some software for this purpose. This long awaited workshop got huge response from students of different universities. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, 107 participants joined this workshop on the scheduled time. Two professional motion graphic designers and entrepreneurs- Zafir Shafiee Chowdhury and Maruf Raihan conducted this workshop as instructors.

The workshop was run from 8 am to 3 pm in two sessions. In the first session, instructors introduced to the participants the visual theme of graphics and basics of two software tools- Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. In the second session, the participants could manage to do some basic designs using that software under the guidance of the instructors. Volunteers from BUET WIE SB AG worked enthusiastically for this workshop from morning to afternoon and helped the participants from registration, meal distribution to software installation and setup. Both instructors and participants enjoyed such a workshop that paved the way of roaming around the world of graphics.

At the end of the workshop, all the participants were given certificates of participation as memorials and inspirations. The instructors were also given certificates and crests as an appreciation to their enormous effort. At the end of the day, the workshop was a successful one, which encouraged all of the impressed participants to explore more and develop their personal skills of graphic designing.

IEEE R10 INNOVATION WORKSHOP (TENNINOW)

On November 3, 2016, BUET WIE Student Branch Affinity Group and WIE Affinity Group, IEEE Bangladesh Section, organized a workshop titled ‘IEEE R10 Innovation Workshop (TENNINOW)’ at ECE Building, BUET. The total number of participants was 30 and all of them were female IEEE members. Mr. Sudeendra Koushik and Ms. Pragya Dixit came all the way from Bangalore, India to conduct the workshop.

Mr. Sundeendra Koushik has completed his PhD on innovation. He has 24 years of international experience in product innovation and development and more than 20 national and international patents in various stages. He is a key note speaker, writer and evangelist of MIT emerging technologies conference. He was awarded Karnataka state innovation council award, HCL excellence award, Sir MV award and so on. Currently he is working as the Vice Chair of IEEE Bangalore Section and Co-Chair of Innovation Committee of IEEE Asia-Pacific. He is also a Trainer and Educationist Entrepreneur, Co-founder of Prasu and Anya.

Ms. Pragya Dixit, on the other hand, has completed her PhD on Entrepreneurship and is a highly successful serial Entrepreneur, Educationist and noted speaker. Prior to and in-between her entrepreneurship career, she also worked as a Professor in Entrepreneurship. She is the Founder of Heritage and Co-founder of Prasu and Anya. She is a well-known speaker in various forums including IEEE, PMI, etc.

 Although innovation differs among individuals and cannot be taught, there are some common skills which can be practiced in a particular way to become innovative. This is what the workshop aimed for. Besides, it focused on Intrapreneurship and Entrepreneurship for Women Career Management. The speakers first shared about their experiences in innovation and entrepreneurship, the barriers they had to face in their careers and how the barriers were overcome. Their words were highly motivating and inspiring, and encouraged all the participants to work hard and find out the true passion among them. The sessions were highly interactive and helpful for developing interpersonal skills.

The workshop was concluded after displaying some video clips on innovation, sef-confidence and courage. Both the instructors and the participants enjoyed the workshop. The knowledge and skills acquired from the workshop will motivate the participants to be more innovative and stretch the existing boundaries to achieve their desired goal.

We express our utmost gratitude to Ms. Pragya Dixit, Mr. Sundeendra Koushik and Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Professor, Department of EEE, BUET and WIE Coordinator, IEEE R10. Last but not the least, volunteers of WIE Affinity Group showed their tremendous effort and dedication to make this event successful.

WORKSHOP ON SIMULINK

 

On December 15, 2016, a workshop titled ‘Workshop on Simulink’ was organized BUET WIE Student Branch Affinity Group at ECE Building, BUET. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Asir Intisar Khan, Lecturer, Department of EEE, BUET and Mr. Mohammad Tariqul Islam, Lecturer, Department of EEE, BUET. A total of 30 participants, including 18 IEEE members, attended the workshop.

Simulink is a block diagram environment for multidomain simulation and Model-Based Design. It supports simulation, automatic code generation, and continuous test and verification of embedded systems. Simulink provides a graphical editor, customizable block libraries, and solvers for modeling and simulating dynamic systems. It is integrated with MATLAB, enabling you to incorporate MATLAB algorithms into models and export simulation results to MATLAB for further analysis. Engineers everywhere use Simulink to get their ideas off the ground, including reducing fuel emissions, developing safety-critical autopilot software, and designing wireless LTE systems.

The workshop was conducted in three sessions. The first two sessions were conducted by Mr. Asir Intisar Khan in which the participants learnt about the basics of Simulink and proceeded to its application on a design project. In the third and final session, Mr. Mohammad Tariqul Islam showed the use of Simulink in drawing single line diagrams of power systems and how it can be used as an alternative to the rather rigorous software, CYME PSAF.

We would not forget to thank our appreciative participants without whom this workshop holds no meaning. The eagerness to learn more and the patience that they showed were motivating. Both the instructors and the participants enjoyed such a motivating workshop. The knowledge and skills acquired from the workshop will help the participants in control system projects, thesis, research and animation. Last but not the least, we would like to thank our enthusiastic volunteers for their hard work and dedication.
