Location: PSDC, 1 Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, 11900 Bayan Lepas, Penang

Abstract
LED solid-state lighting (SSL) has made tremendous progress over the past decades. Although LED lighting is known for its high energy efficiency, there are several limitations and challenges for the exiting LED lighting technology. Specifically, due to the intrinsic characteristic called ‘efficiency droop’, LEDs become less efficient and convert less of their electrical energy into light under high power operation. Integration of visible light communication capability in LED SSL, or Li-Fi, has been a topic of intense research after the idea was proposed in 2011. To date, a data rate of up to 100Mbps has been demonstrated. At KAUST, Prof. Ooi and team are developing the next generation of SSL lighting using visible laser diodes. Laser diodes do not suffer efficiency droop at high current densities. This allows for the design of lamps using a single, small footprint, light-emitting chip operating at high current densities. Using a single chip reduces system costs compared with LEDs because the system uses less material per chip, requires fewer chips, and employs simplified optics and a simplified heat-sink. The chip area required for LED technologies will be significantly reduced using laser-based solid state lighting. This technology will also enable highly controllable beams in term of tunable throw distance, tunable color temperature and rendering index. In this talk, speaker will give a general overview of the field and focus his talk on the recent progress of laser-based SSL technology and GaN-based photonics integrated circuits. Applications of visible lasers to Gpbs visible light communications, underwater communication, indoor horticulture, etc, will also be discussed.

Biodata of Speaker
Boon S. Ooi completed his B. Eng. and Ph. D. degrees in electronics and electrical engineering at the University of Glasgow (Scotland, U.K.) before moving to Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) as an Assistant Professor in 1996. In 2000, he moved to California, USA, as the Co-founder and Vice President of Technology, for Phosistor Technologies. In late 2003, he took up an Associate Professor position at Lehigh University (Pennsylvania, USA). He joined KAUST as a Full Professor of Electrical Engineering in 2009. Presently, he is the Director of King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KACST) Technology Innovation Center, a major international research initiative, fully funded by KACST – the national science agency of Saudi Arabia.

His research is concerned with the study of semiconductor lasers, LEDs and photonic integrated circuits for applications in energy efficient solid-state lighting and visible light communications. He served on the editorial board of IEEE Photonics Journal from 2009-2015. He is Associate Editor of SPIE Journal of Nanophotonics and OSA Optics Express. He is serving on the Technical Program of IEDM, CLEO, and IPC. He is a Fellow of SPIE and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK). He was honored to present on behalf of the Saudi Government at COP 18 (The 18th Conference of Parties), United Nation Global Climate Change Conference in 2012, and COP 22 in 2016.
