Abstract

Everything you every wanted to know about the properties of a channel or how it might perform in a system is contained in its S-Parameters. This data has become a universal format for the description of channel performance, not just in high speed serial links, but in all aspects of signal integrity and interconnect design. Yet the complexities inherent in this description often hide the valuable information contained in it and require considerable effort to interpret.
This brief presentation will introduce you to the important essential principles of S-parameter and how to interpret their response at a glance. We will look at 4-port S- parameters in the frequency and time domain and as single-ended and in their differential form. General interpretations for the four commonly observed patterns will be offered and a check list of questions to ask about the quality and consistency of the S-parameter data will be provided.
At the end of this presentation, S-parameters will be an important tool in your toolbox to tame interconnects and engineer them for your applications.
