9.00 – 13.00: A tutorial on high availability clusters
The first part of the talk aims to present the fundamentals on high availability and load balancing on computers networking. It starts by giving the students a reasonable understanding about the meaning of downtime, availability and the most common associated metrics. Then, a wide set of techniques to mitigate downtime is presented and framed in an availability index. The most relevant data replication technologies are also introduced. The presentation proceeds by presenting the distinction between high availability and load balancing concepts, including the main methodologies to efficiently achieve both results.
The second part of the talk is fully dedicated to the presentation of case studies with both high availability and load balancing features, using cluster architectures with open source software implementations for Linux.
16.00 – 18.00: An introduction to cloud computing infrastructure
This talk aims to introduce the students in cloud computing and big data technologies. It starts with a formal definition of “cloud”, its main characteristics, service models and deployment models. The talk proceeds with an explanation about virtualization both of servers and storage. Several issues regarding “to be or not to be” on the cloud are also discussed. Finally, a general architecture of cloud big data is presented, followed by a set of case studies with real world problems.
Mário Antunes is an associate professor at School of Technology and Management, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal. He holds a PhD in Computer Science by University of Porto and is actually a senior researcher at Center for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS), a R&D unit of INESC-TEC Research Laboratory. His main areas of interest are computers networking, systems administration, cloud infrastructure and big data, datacenters infrastructure, high availability clusters and anomaly detection in data streams.
