Mini-Symposium on Data-Analytics for Power System

Along with the Smart Grid development, modern power systems are entering a “data-intensive” era, where a vast volume of power grid data is collected through advanced sensing and communication technologies, such as smart metering data, phasor measurement data, as well as meteorological data (e.g., wind speed and solar irradiance) related to renewable power generation, etc.Such data contains comprehensive information about the power system covering equipment’s health status, power grid’s static and dynamic characteristics, renewable power generation, load customers’ electricity usage pattern, etc. Therefore, advanced data-analytics techniques are needed to convert such data to knowledge for practical application.

This special session aims to present the state-of-the-art research works on data-analytics for power system’s operation, control, and situational awareness. Topics of presentations and research papers include but are not limited to:

  • Smart grid data compression, detection, fusion, storage and information management
  • Data management for advanced metering infrastructure
  • Measurement-based power system modeling
  • PMU and micro-PMU applications in power grids
  • Data-driven renewable power generation forecasting
  • Fraud detection in smart meter data
  • Predictive data-based asset health monitoring and management
  • Residential customer load pattern recognition
  • Data-driven demand response and dynamic pricing
  • Wide-area monitoring and visualization of smart transmission system
  • Data-driven enhanced situational awareness of power system dynamics

Organizers:

Dr Yan Xu obtained his B.E. and M.E. degrees from South China University of Technology, China, and PhD degree from University of Newcastle, Australia, in 2008, 2011, and 2013, respectively. After his PhD graduation, he conducted postdoctoral research at University of Newcastle, and later at University of Sydney with the University of Sydney Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (only 10 awarded internationally for all areas per year). In 2016, he joined Nanyang Technological University with the Nanyang Assistant Professorship (only 10 awarded internationally for all areas per year). His research areas include power system stability, control and optimization, microgrid, and data-analytics for smart grid applications. He has published 70 international SCI journal papers (including 42 in IEEE Transactions and 16 in IET Proceedings). He has also authored over 30 international conference papers and 2 book chapters. He has received 6 awards from IEEE and IET paper contest and best paper awards.

Stephen McArthur is a Professor and the Deputy Associate Principal at the University of Strathclyde, UK. His research interests include intelligent system applications in power engineering. Data analytic solutions developed by his team have been deployed for a range of national and international energy companies.  He is the Academic Director for Strathclyde’s Advanced Nuclear Research Centre and Academic Director of the Low Carbon Power and Energy theme within Strathclyde’s Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC). He is Director of the joint Strathclyde and Imperial College EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Power Networks and Smart Grids and co-directs the UK EPSRC Energy Networks Hub, HubNet. Previously, he led the EPSRC Energy Networks Grand Challenge programme entitled “The Autonomic Power System”, researching the next generation of autonomous power systems. Professor McArthur is a co-Director of the Institute for Energy and Environment at the University of Strathclyde which comprises over 30 academics and over 200 full-time research students and staff. He is also the Chief Technology Officer of the spin-out company Bellrock Technology, which has developed an open and self-organising software platform which accelerates the deployment of analytic algorithms and decision support. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and IET.
