Distributed energy resources to enhance customers and utilities resilience

Full Day Tutorial + Substation visit   (Monday, 4th December, 8:30am-4:30pm)

This tutorial will provide insights into a myriad of distributed energy resources applications and how they can enhance both customers and utilities resilience. Examples of DER applications deployed by Vector, New Zealand (largest New Zealand distribution utility will be presented and there will be an opportunity to visit Vector’s 1MW/2.3MWh battery energy storage system. A world leading Internet of Energy (IoE) platform developed by mPrest, which is able to optimise the use of DERs, whilst seamlessly integrating several IT and control systems will also be presented.

After the morning tutorial session actual substation visit in the afternoon, will be undertaken, where participants can engage with detailed Q&A around installation, performance and operation of the system in site. Health and safety briefing and protective gear for site visit will  be provided.

Cristiano Marantes

Dr. Cristiano Marantes is the Head of Engineering at Vector. He is responsible for the planning of the future Vector electricity and gas networks. One of his key responsibilities include the development and integration of new and innovative technologies, (e.g. battery storage, micro-grids, electric vehicles, solar, demand response). Prior to joining Vector Cristiano was the Head of Innovation at UK Power Networks, which is the largest electricity network operator in the UK. He is passionate about innovation, low carbon technologies and sustainability.

Cristiano has a PhD in Power Systems from The University of Manchester, UK, was a noteworthy visiting lecturer at City University, London’s “Power Systems and Energy Management” MSc, and an influential member of the Smart Grid Great Britain Executive.
